Earl wants a shot at redemption

"We were probably out a bit too late"...Sandor Earl insists he did nothing wrong on the night he ended up in the cells. Photo: Anthony Johnson SANDOR EARL, the rookie winger released by the Roosters after he finished a night out locked in police cells with recently sacked hooker Jake Friend, halfback Mitchell Pearce and Manly's Kieran Foran, wants a second shot at the NRL to prove the kind of person he really is. Insisting he did nothing wrong at the Tank nightclub, the 20-year-old - who has been linked to the Wests Tigers among other clubs - warned other young footballers to learn from his misfortune. ''We were probably out a bit too late,'' he said of the night he celebrated his first grade debut. ''A few of the boys [and I] went out to the Tank nightclub and it went too long. Advertisement: Story continues below ''I don't really drink, I'm not a big drinker, I don't have a problem with alcohol and a lot of people I know were surprised when they heard of the trouble. I don't have an issue with it.'' Two members of the group became rowdy and pelted patrons at another table with ice. It ended in a scuffle and the subsequent allegation that a woman was hit in the face. ''I didn't throw any ice,'' he said. ''I had been drinking but I'd sobered up when it happened. I was definitely in control. The next day when we went to the lawyer's office I was the one who told the story [of events].'' Earl found himself involved in the incident because he was sitting at the end of a horseshoe-shaped table. He intercepted a male member from the other group who made his way to their table. ''There was swearing and abuse and the Rosetta Stone English (American) guy came over from the other group, and it was [probably] fortunate that I was at the end of the table,'' he said. ''I got up and said there was six of us and to 'let it go'. ''There was still [verbal] abuse going on. Five seconds later the bouncers were there and we left. ''We went outside and the bouncers came running out saying someone had hit a girl.'' The group was asked for their identification and they weren't allowed to leave the area. Earl said it was alleged he'd hit the woman with a haymaker. He also heard that both he and Friend were supposed to have thrown punches. ''The reason the Roosters allowed me to keep playing after that was because I didn't throw any punches,'' he said. ''But the process [after a player gets in trouble] was a shock. It was full-on, you don't realise what it is like until you go through it. We were dragged to the police station and we had to sit in the cells. We were instructed not to talk [to the media]. It was different. It was [after] my first first-grade game so not many people latched onto me but it was incredible to see a few footballers drinking and a scuffle [covered like] murder.'' Earl said he did not believe the incident had ruined his life but he has no doubt it ended any chance he may have had at gaining a new deal with the Roosters. ''Well, I don't think it has affected my life but it didn't put me in the right stead for football,'' he said. ''It didn't help my case to sign a new contract with the Roosters. However, it has come up in [contract] talks with potential clubs. ''Brad Fittler [former Roosters coach] has been great. He's vouched for me to a few people and I appreciate that. I won't let him down if I get that shot.'' Friend, 19, was sacked by the Roosters during the week after being charged with using offensive language towards police and failing to pay a taxi fare. The club has said it would continue to offer Friend whatever support he may need. Earl refused to comment on his former teammate. ''All I can say is I've learned a lot,'' he said.

US, S.Korea to wrap up war games amid N.Korea crisis

The US and South Korean navies were Wednesday set to wrap up war games meant as a muscular show of force to North Korea, as world powers remained sharply divided on how to deal with the nuclear-armed regime. Their biggest-ever joint exercise, which has seen jet fighters thunder through the sky above a US carrier battle group, began days after Pyongyang stunned the world with a deadly artillery strike on a South Korean island. The shelling of Yeonpyeong island, which killed two marines and two civilians, has infuriated South Koreans and sharply raised public support for a far tougher military response if the volatile North should attack again. Advertisement: Story continues below The 10 warships and 7,300 crew taking part in the drill were Wednesday carrying out "manoeuvres of fleet protection and logistic sustainment under various scenarios of enemy threat", said South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff. They also said both sides were planning more drills this month or in early 2011, although no details had been finalised yet. The North has warned that the four-day Yellow Sea exercises brought the Koreas closer to "the brink of war". In the South, Defence Minister Kim Tae-Young said there was "ample possibility" of another North Korean strike. The regime of Kim Jong-Il, which has staged two atomic bomb tests since 2006, ramped up tensions when it boasted Tuesday about a new nuclear facility that, experts warn, could be used to produce weapons-grade uranium. With the Korean peninsula plunged into its worst crisis in years, diplomats at the United Nations and elsewhere struggled to find common ground on whether to punish Pyongyang or seek to engage it in new talks. China, the long-time patron of the communist regime, has blocked attempts for a UN Security Council condemnation of North Korea over its attack and its new nuclear activities, which contravene UN resolutions, diplomats said. One diplomat said veto-wielding China considered "it is unacceptable to 'condemn' or even 'express concern' over North Rosetta Stone Portuguese Korea". "Council talks have come to a standstill. It is now very likely that the Security Council will do nothing about North Korea," the diplomat said. Beijing has instead proposed that the six parties to long-stalled North Korean denuclearisation talks -- the two Koreas, the United States, China, Russia and Japan -- hold an emergency meeting on the crisis. Washington, Seoul and Tokyo have been cool to the proposal or rejected it. White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters: "I think the Chinese have a duty and an obligation to greatly press upon the North Koreans that their belligerent behaviour has to come to an end. "And I think you'll see progress on multilateral discussions around this over the next few days." Diplomats are seeking to arrange a meeting between US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the South Korean and Japanese foreign ministers, though no date has been announced yet. Envoys from North Korea and Japan are now visiting Beijing, and China's top foreign policy official Dai Bingguo was expected to head to North Korea this week, according to reports. The frantic diplomacy is going on against the backdrop of a massive leak of US embassy cables by whistle-blower site Wiki Leaks, which adds a new perspective on China's views about North Korea. China has long supplied the impoverished country with food, energy and diplomatic cover, in part because it fears a regime collapse that would bring a flood of refugees and erase a buffer state with the US-allied South. But the leaked US cables -- although they are second- and third-hand accounts of Chinese officials' views -- nonetheless suggest Beijing is growing more exasperated with its neighbour. The sensitive cables also reflected a view that China may be growing more open to the North eventually being absorbed by the South. The spike in tensions comes as North Korea's Kim, 68, is thought to be in poor health and readying to hand over power to his youngest son Kim Jong-Un, who two months ago assumed a top military post at the age of 27.

Iran 'stoning woman' denies being lashed

AFP An Iranian woman claiming to be the one sentenced to death by stoning has denied that she was lashed in prison and tortured, in an interview aired on state television. The woman, wearing a face-covering chador, was said to be Sakineh Mohammadi-Ashtiani, the 43-year-old mother of two who has been sentenced to death by stoning. She denied on Wednesday that she was lashed after The Times of London published on August 28 a picture of a woman it identified as her who was not wearing the Islamic headscarf. Advertisement: Story continues below By law, women in the Islamic republic must be covered from head to foot, with their hair completely veiled. Soon after publication of the picture there were reports that Mohammadi-Ashtiani was punished with 99 lashes in prison. Her son, Sajjad, too said on September 6 that he had "heard" his mother was lashed over the published picture. "No. I do not confirm it. It is all a lie and rumour," the Rosetta Stone French woman said on television in the Azeri language, with Farsi subtitles. This was the second such broadcast of what state television said was an interview of Mohammadi-Ashtiani whose stoning sentence has generated an international outcry. Mohammadi-Ashtiani has been sentenced to death by stoning for adultery and has also received a 10-year jail term for participating in the murder of her husband. Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast has repeatedly said a final decision about her verdict is still pending. On Wednesday, the woman also denied she was tortured to accept doing the previous interview aired, on August 12. "I have not been tortured. What I say are my words and no one has forced me to come in front of the camera. What I say is all mine," she said. As in the August 12 broadcast, she admitted that a man with whom she was acquainted had offered to kill her husband and that she had let him do it. Several foreign governments and human rights bodies have denounced her stoning sentence as barbaric, and some have even questionedwhether she received a fair trial. Mohammadi-Ashtiani's son had expressed fear that his mother would be executed after Ramadan, which ended last week.

Twice he coughed up possession in attacking positions

Troubled ... Roosters playmaker Todd Carney struggled to impose his attacking game. Photo: Brendan Esposito WITH fluorescent orange boots that would make the roughest of council workers proud, Todd Carney made a high-vis return to the playing field against the Sharks yesterday. The only thing more colourful than Carney's Nikes was the language directed at the Dally M medallist as he attempted to rescue the Roosters from a six-match losing streak. In his first match since being suspended for his second alcohol-related incident this year, Carney couldn't be accused of not having a crack. And while there were more rocks than diamonds, he showed enough to suggest the Roosters' season isn't over just yet. The star five-eighth tried every trick in his book to get his side over the line yesterday, but the same couldn't be said of his teammates. Advertisement: Story continues below ''It was encouraging, I thought he moved really well and, condit-ioning-wise, I was a bit surprised, really, that he was playing as well at the end of the game as much as he was,'' coach Brian Smith said. ''Logically you'd look for improvement in his touch and his combinations with other players as the next couple of weeks go by. ''When we pinned them in the second half and got lots of opportunities, that's when I thought we just lacked quality, and when Todd is at his best he certainly offers that for us. It was the same last year for him, he got better at the mid-point of the year and we rode off the back of that. ''That's not to say it was all about Todd today when we are losing, nor was it when we were winning. But he is an Rosetta Stone Spanish (Spain)important part of that attacking jigsaw, so we do execute a bit better and convert territorial and try-scoring plays into points. We missed that today.'' Carney's first attacking kick inside the Sharks' half seemingly led to first points for the Roosters through back-rower Tom Symonds. Coming down just right of the uprights, Symonds looked to be impeded by a Sharks blocker before catching the ball on his knees and falling over the line. But video referee Steve Clark saw it differently, awarding the Sharks a lucky penalty. Rivalling the height of Carney's bomb was the Sharks fans' level of disdain for the rehabilitating star, with calls of ''go back to rehab'' and ''have another drink'' echoing around the Toyota Stadium grandstand. Shifting between first and second receiver, Carney looked at ease in his customary left side position, if not a little short of fitness. But the Sharks had done their homework, putting constant pressure on the under-done pivot each time he touched the ball. Twice he coughed up possession in attacking positions, but for every couple of stones he produced, Carney was able to unearth a gem - his first setting up the Roosters' only try of the match for Kane Linnett just two minutes short of the break. After getting a faceball away for Linnett inside the Roosters' 40 metres for a 50m break, the tricolours maintained control of the ball when Carney was tackled from an offside Sharks play at the play-the-ball just short of the line. In typical Carney fashion, he called for the ball the very next play and put Linnett over - the centre unfortunately dislocating his shoulder in the process. While he warmed to his passing game, Carney's kicking radar was misguided. Possibly, the glare from his fluoro boots combined with the setting sun served as a distraction as he missed the conversion. His boots barely touched ball again in the half. But his involvement didn't decline in the second period, with him commanding the ball every set but uncharacteristically out of sync with the Roosters' makeshift left-side attack.

Wednesday TV: Nightmares and Dreamscapes

Nightmares and Dreams capes Go!, 10.30pm Stephen King's numerous books, films and TV spin-offs are usually aligned with the fright and gore genres, even though his best work is more akin to speculative science fiction, where pointy-head science takes a back seat to big-ticket philosophicalmusings. Based on a King short story from 1986, The End of the Whole Mess is a rumination on crime, violence and the doctrine of original sin. Advertisement: Story continues below It takes the form of a video diary in which a filmmaker (Ron Livingstone) remembers his child-prodigy brother (Henry Thomas). From an early age, Robert displayed signs of mad genius, laterbecoming obsessed with humankind's self-destructive urges, which leads him to discover a potion that can reduce aggression. Naturally, there's a caveat to this experiment, which impliesthat nature has equipped humankind with both greatness andbaseness. This US series was filmed in Melbourne (and has previously airedon pay TV), which explains the many familiar faces in supportingroles (Rebecca Gibney, Nicholas Bell, among others) and locations. Getting On ABC1, 8.35pm This is funny and smart. Really smart. Not in a tricky,brainy-plotted Lost kind of way but in the manner of a show whosegenuinely inventive script, cracking dialogue and imaginativecharacters transcend all the conventional props of scripted dramas.Funny, too, in a darkly pessimistic vein. Co-written by the threemain actors - lacerating British comedienne Jo Brand, Joanna Scanlan (The Thick of It) and Vicki Pepperdine (a study insuperciliousness to match Robyn Rosetta Stone Arabic Butler's excruciatingpassive-aggressive turn in The Librarians), it riffs off the simpleidea of a bunch of doctors and nurses emasculated by nanny-statebureaucracy, terminal boredom and brazen indifference for theirmostly hopeless patients. The language, coupled with its bleak view of an institution that TV generally treats with reverence and sentiment, makes this a show that won't appeal to all. For everyone else, be quick: tonight is the second of only three episodes. Shrink Rap ABC2, 9.30pm Dr Pamela Connolly's interview series usually straddles thecomfort-discomfort zone, except for tonight, when it plungesheadlong into the latter. The doctor lets loose on a barelyrecognisable Carrie Fisher, reminding the actress, author, bipolarsufferer, substance-abuser and all-round Hollywood casualty of herf lamboyantly troubled life. At times addled and barely coherent, Fisher wheels out a few of her much-quoted quips ("bad reality, good anecdote") but the painrests squarely with Connolly, who several times fails to explain, for the benefit of viewers, who Fisher is talking about. This makes the discussion about as exciting and engaging as a flip through thep hone book. Upon hearing one of the many bizarre twists of Fisher's endlessly kooky life, she even has the gall to ask, "Are you saying that this was a very funny spin on what actually happened, or that these things truly occurred?" To me, at least, it doesn't look like Fisher is making any of it up. The Rat Pack ABC2, 8pm Inspector Rex's place as TV's favourite canine is under threat.Meet Charlie, a nine-year-old Jack Russell whose favourite pastimeis hunting down rats and snapping their necks in his jaw.

That where wed start but it might be better than that

The usual. How important was it to get the baseline V6-auto official fuel consumption figure to 10.9L100km, considering it is now identical to the Ford Falcon XT? I think given that we have now got there, pretty damned good and pretty critical. It the old $19,990 or $19.99 trick. If you look at 11 and you go to 10.9 it 0.1 of a litres. Work it out and it actually 50 litres in 50,000km. So $70. So who gives a continental? But psychologically it is good. What about V8? Is there a chance youll look at a smaller capacity option than the 6.0-litre you currently offer? We havent really thought about it. There is a 5.3 available, but that might have the same issues as the 2.8-litre V6, simplysacrifising performance without tangible economy gains. Where are you at on the alternatives to traditional petrol engines turbo-diesel, displacement on demand for the V8 and hybrid V6s. Theyre all in the future, but not July 06. Displacement on demand (or Active Fuel Management in GM-speak Editor) is available. It came along very late in the program but we werent comfortable with what it meant from a noise and vibration point of view and trying to develop it for this point of time. That should give you the sense we are working on it but not for today. It one thing to get the thing to run on four cylinders another thing to do it without rattling your teeth and all those sorts of things. So we have some work to do. The US isnt that far ahead of us, they probably have it in a few trucks, but we are probably the first in the corp doing passenger cars and it is proving difficult. But we are definitely working on it. Is it a chance to be seen in this generation of Commodore, given its lifecycle is likely to be six rather than the traditional eight to nine years? I think it will be in this architecture, yes. The problem for Holden with diesel seems to be that GM Rosetta Stone German cupboard is pretty bare? We are waiting for them to come up with one. It will come from VM (VM Motori Italian diesel engine manufacturer) and Im thinking it will be a V6 of around 3.0-litres in capacity. I havent seen it and as far as I know we havent had access to it yet. What we have done up till now has been with a German manufacturer (BMW) which has sold engines to Opel and that way we have got the entr2;e. But very expensive programs. So the BMW avenue cant fly? Not in the current circumstances no. I think we would have to have absolutely no hope on the GM front and petrol would have to be a bit more expensive I suppose. Do you need an export component to a diesel program to get it up and running? The type of market we export too in the main couldnt give a continental about diesel because their petrol is about 30c per litre. Wed have to justify it on domestic and I think we could, given we are pretty good at getting programs up with 5000 to 10,000 volume. That where wed start but it might be better than that. It would be a good car. Wed do some ute, it would have been good for Adventra, people always said that what it lacked. Would the diesel be due to arrive with the utility toward the end of 07? No, I dont think we could do it in that timeframe given where we are right now. What about hybrid. Is it a chance for this generation? Gee, that a hard one to predict. It a chance, I think it a good chance But it will be in the second half of the cycle, whatever the cycle of this one is. We know it won't be nine years though. We dont have that luxury of that anymore, given the outputs of the Mazdas and Hondas and that is what we are up against.

The association quickly earned the SLR the nickname McMerc

The price in Australia would be closer to $1.3 million. Unsurprisingly the McLaren F1 team has injected technology from its formula one machines, predominantly in the extensive use of carbon fibre reinforced plastic. Almost every panel and body component on the SLR is made from carbon fibre, with the aim of reducing weight and improving stiffness, speed and precision. At 1.8 tonnes, though, the SLR is far from a featherweight sports car. An inconsistent brake feel, too, doesn't help on the stop-start LA freeways. The pedal feel is initially quite firm but unresponsive, prompting a firmer action, which then activates the brakes too much, leading to jerky braking. In an emergency situation there are no such issues, with the carbon-ceramic discs biting hard to halt the substantial machine. Mercedes and McLaren have injected plenty of supercar character into the SLR. From the instant the supercharged V8 fires, it's all business. The 5.4-litre engine is essentially a more powerful version of the engine once widely used in Mercedes AMGs but now replaced by a 6.2-litre V8, minus the supercharger. It's mounted deep back in the chassis to improve front to rear weight balance. Even a partial throttle application brings the engine almost instantly to life, its bark rising to a menacing scream, always underwritten by a mechanical concerto unexpected in such a sleek, sexy machine. There's also Rosetta Stone Hindi the distant whir of the supercharger, employed to force more air into the engine. The result is the most powerful Mercedes road car ever, mustering 460kW. Acceleration to 100kmh takes just 3.8 seconds on the way to a top speed of 2kmh. And that's all through a five-speed automatic transmission. You realise just how potent the McLaren SLR is when accelerating alongside a regular Mercedes AMG, already a brutally quick machine. The SLR is much quicker. Driving through the rear wheels, the McMerc uses its 19-inch rubber to full effect, doing a solid job of transferring drive to the road. The massive 780Nm of torque, or pulling power, is clearly enough to break traction. But the electronics and grip do their best to keep proceedings proper. There's almost no body shake, ensuring the car's steering and immense cornering ability. It builds speed so quickly - it can reach almost 0kmh by the time most family cars touch 100kmh. Driven sedately, though, the SLR is a viceless partner, even if the firm suspension can get tiresome on second--grade roads. It was all worth it, though, to sample two of the most sought-after Mercedes-Benzes ever built. What the classic lacks in performance and ability it makes up with character and a sheer sense of occasion. The 300 SL is also a fair chance of appreciating in value, whereas we'd wager the SLR McLaren will probably head the other way, at least initially. But both will maintain their status as benchmarks in the history of Mercedes-Benz.

It was a rebuff to China's ambitions, and it stung

China protested by cancelling a ministerial visit to Australia. Smith added: I vaguely remember the Leader of the Opposition saying to the Government some time ago that we should stand up to China. We did on the Rebiya Kadeer issue. It was a clear message to China - we will not allow you to veto our sovereign right to set immigration policy. Smith also gave a spirited defence of the principle of freedom of speech. The chicken has decided to put up a fight. Senior officials in the Australian Government believe that Beijing has four principal grievances against Australia at the moment. First was Rudd's speech on Tibet. Second was the collapse of the bid by China's state-owned Chinalco to buy a bigger stake in Rio Tinto. It was a rebuff to China's ambitions, and it stung. Stern Hu was duly arrested. Since then, Beijing has downgraded the charge against him from stealing state secrets to stealing trade secrets. That reduces the potential punishment from the death penalty to a seven-year jail term. But the vengeful anger smoulders still. Third was Australia's defence white paper, which nominated China as potentially the biggest source of instability in the Asia-Pacific. Fourth was the visa for Rebiya Kadeer. Taken together, it's enough for Chinese state-controlled media to denounce the sinophobic government of Kevin Rudd, as it did this week. Yet despite the rage in Beijing, the economic relationship Rosetta Stone Spanish (Latin) is thriving, utterly untouched by the diplomatic storm. This week's gas deal was stunning. China invited the Resources Minister, Martin Ferguson, for the ceremonial signing of the biggest business deal in Australian history, the $50 billion, -year deal to buy liquefied natural gas from the Gorgon field. Ferguson also met a senior Chinese minister, Zhang Ping, chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission. At the same time, China's Commerce Minister, Chen Deming, has agreed to a new round of negotiations for a free trade agreement with Australia. In talks with the Trade Minister, Simon Crean, Chen even proposed a new formula for making progress in the stalled talks. This is Australia's leverage. For China's successful rise it needs ever-growing quantities of food and fuel in a world that will be increasingly short of both. The chicken has a sharp beak and strong claws. The Rudd policy of business plus values is drawing a lot of noise from Beijing but no real price. Not yet, at least. The next big test will be the Dalai Lama's proposed visit to Australia in November. As for Wei Jingsheng, asked whether he planned to meet Rudd during his visit to Australia, he said: I am close to Kevin Rudd, but given his position now I will not make trouble for him. The Dalai Lama will make trouble enough. Wei laughed: The Dalai Lama and Rebiya Kadeer are good friends of mine. We take it in turns to visit to make trouble. The fox will not be amused. More tests lie ahead. Peter Hartcher is the Herald's international editor.

Greatness vision a case of a forward thinking

Photo: Getty Images WALLABIES second-rower Mark Chisholm was talking it up bigyesterday, claiming that despite six successive Tri Nations lossesthey were on the verge of being a great team and were actually farfitter than the world champion Springboks. The media contingent that attended Chisholm's press conferencein Brisbane yesterday had to check themselves as he relentlessly spruiked the Wallabies cause before tomorrow night's Test at Suncorp Stadium. Chisholm, who returned to the Test line-up against South Africain Perth last weekend after an extensive injury break, was adamantthat, despite Australia's dreadful Tri Nations campaign, they werea class act. Advertisement: Story continues below ''We are just inches away from firstly winning and secondly being something great,'' Chisholm said. Rugby scribes were soon asking questions about greatness, justto confirm they had heard right and Chisholm responded. ''We're certainly going in that direction. It's only a matter oftime until we achieve the steps to get there. We're on the brink atthe moment. I can definitely sense it that we're almost there,''Chisholm said. ''There is fantastic body language, and the ability of the young blokes to learn as well is good. They are getting better. Mentally, the young blokes are up to it. And physically, well just have alook at David Pocock. He's a big, big man for a young bloke, andcer tainly has a big future in the game.'' There were as many raised eyebrows when Chisholm argued that thelevel of fitness within the Australian team was exceptional. ''Running around the field, I found we were the fitter side Rosetta Stone V3 outthere and sitting in the grandstands the last couple of weeks I cansee we're finishing games on top of teams. It is just a minorad justment in the first minutes that will get us to a win,''Chisholm said. ''Defensively, we were inept and certainly this weekwe have nutted that out and are now looking forward to completing afull 80 minutes.'' Again a confirmation on whether Chisholm meant that this year's side was fitter than previous Wallabies sides or actual opponen tswas required. ''No, I'm talking opponents. The whole team was getting up andrunning and completing phases last week,'' Chisholm said. ''You canreally tell. Body language was a big thing, and obviously the South Africans had trouble. Running around the field you could notice thed ifference. ''If the game is in the balance, we know that mentally andphy sically we will be able to get over the top.'' Wallabies praising their fitness is fine, but it must bestressed that in numerous recent Tests, opponents have actually runover them in the final stages of games. While their last 15 minutesagainst the Springboks in Perth when the Test was lost was fine, they badly squandered leads in the Auckland and Sydney Tri Nationsmatches against the All Blacks. After those losses, the level ofthe Wallabies conditioning was questioned. Also a factor in why the Springboks might have been tired in thefinal stages of the Subiaco Oval Test was that they made 107tackles in the game, compared with the Wallabies' 43. Earlier, Springboks second-rower Victor Matfield said heexpected the Wallabies to opt for shorter lineouts as a way tocompensate for having just three jumpers compared with South Africa's four. He also did not believe Tatafu Polota-Nau's erraticlineout throwing would be a factor in the Test.

More D-words for Henson

Last night the photographer Bill Henson launched at the Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery his first exhibition since, well, the other one - the one that inspired in Australia's most esteemed art critic, the aesthete and moral arbiter, Kevin Rudd, the assessment, after much chin-stroking, of ''revolting''. Barry Humphries took pause at the opening to tell The Diary how much he loved the show, and what a fan he was of Henson's work. He confessed to being disappointed that the Art Gallery of NSW director Edmund Capon had opened the show; he would have liked Rudd to have done that, ''because he's so perceptive in having described it as disgusting without actually having seen it''. It's fair to say that Henson's work, which often chronicles the transition of youth to adulthood - a time of complication, drama, and uncertainty - has also inspired responses in the culture at large that can be characterised in the same sort of way. In other words, his art is challenging. The question The Diary put to the art critic John McDonald was whether the controversy - and fear of prosecution - had influenced Henson and his latest work. ''I've spoken to him a few times and he says he is not going to change his style. But having said that, it's obviously something playing on his mind.'' McDonald said that while the show was in the same vein - ''figures and landscape'' - it was noticeably more ''discreet and diplomatic than the last one - a shoulder here, an elbow there. I think if he has any images he may perceive as more risque, they would be shown overseas, and he's probably made a shrewd decision. But I do think it's Rosetta Stone Korean an indictment of us as a society that we've worked negatively to influence a major artist this way.'' TOO MUCH SHOCK Being a shock jock is never having to say you're sorry - well, not really. A quick recap for latecomers. Yesterday David Oldfield, the former One Nation MP, who was axed in mysterious circumstances from 2GB's midnight-to-five shift in March, announced in an on-air apology that he had been suspended from 2UE for making ''inappropriate'' remarks. The remarks were in relation to the treatment of asylum seekers detained on Christmas Island. On Tuesday drive-time he said the electric fence should be turned on to ''fry'' anyone trying to escape. When an elderly listener phoned to protest, and said he should go back to 2GB with that kind of comment, he carried on in the same vein and said ''or barbecue them''. His apology, then, would have to be cracker - unreservedly repentant, that sort of thing - to kindle some goodwill, not least to reinflate what is a rapidly deflating broadcasting career. However, though he did say ''I sincerely apologise for my poor choice of language'', he couldn't resist preceding those words with ''While I maintain security measures should be tightened at our detention centres - and I stand by those comments '' Some comments, we humbly suggest, are not worth standing too close to, especially when they are such poor company. As he reflects on his not being allowed to say such things, Oldfield might ponder just what exactly is the point of being a shock jock. If so, he may well be onto something. Leadership: Whats Your Reputation Rating?

Recently, a friend sent me a note about the 2020 Workplace bookhighlighting three themes. First, by 2020, every leader will have a reputation score. Second, leader-led learning will be embedded at work. Three, teams will elect their own leaders. Well, which side are you on: the revolutionaries or conservatives? It probably doesnt matter. The tide will sweep you away if you dont keep up. But, how do you build that leadership score? Below are six dimensions to consider, as you plan your journey to the world of 2020 leadership. Before starting though, let me comment on the third trend. People already elect their leaders. Not by voting but via individual decisions (day to day) as to whether they fully commit or just coast along or worse, resist. The formal vote will be just that a formalisation. So, lets check those leadership metrics that might determine your score: 1. Vision power: do your people know where youre taking them? Do your leadership actions help to lift their sights? Across the team, is there goal alignment? 2. Energy quotient: do people have that Nike just do it drive and deep organisational willpower? Is each person fired up? 3. Culture quality: do people Rosetta Stone Arabic know how theyre expected to behave? Have you modelled appropriate behaviour? Are constructive values in place? 4. Task performance: are operating standards clear? Does everyone know what output is required? Is productivity rising? 5. Organisation integrity: are people bonded as part of a team with effective relationships? Each person knowing where and how they fit in? 6. Renewal capability: is there continuous learning and reinventing? Do people have the chance for creativity? Are change and development accepted norms? We often speak of 2020 hindsight. But, what we need is foresight. The technical and social elements of our lives are changing ever faster. It would be my guess that if you performed well on the six metrics above, youd be in pretty good shape. So why not get your people together for a cup of coffee and ask them for comments on what you could do to raise your score on each of the six measures. Use their input to make a plan.2020 sounds futuristic. But, a decade isnt long. So lets hope weve each honed our skills and developed good personal scores. Otherwise, the 2020 leadership elections will dump us onto historys scrap heap along with the buggy whip and also the internal combustion engine.

Player Styles And How You Can Beat Them

While you are Studying and watching your opponents, you'll see that they fall in to typical styles depending on their overall play. The four general styles are loose-passive, loose-aggressive , tight-passive, tight-aggressive. But how do you beat them?Knowing what "type" of players you are up against and how you can adapt your play to beat them is yet another skill to develop. But once you are able to spot what style of players your opponents are you can figure out a plan for each one.Loose-passive players tend to enter many, many pots calling with just about any two cards and hoping to hit something later. Bet in to them aggressively if you have a decent hand. Loose-passive players don't usually respond well to pressure and fold if they have nothing. Beware if one bits back though.Tight-passive players typical action is to play very few hands and wait for the premium starting hands. Then they tend to bet big. It's a clear signal that they've got a great hand when they come out of their shell. When they do emerge from under their rock, get out. Otherwise, give them an excuse to fold and bully them.Loose-aggressive players (as you've probably guessed by now) spray huge amount of chips all over the table all the time. They enter almost every hand with extreme aggression like they've been dealt AA every time. Nobody has the number of great cards a loose-aggressive player Rosetta Stone Italian would have you believe. So how do you play them? Just stay out of their way and let them take out a few of your opponents. Even though it means the "maniac" may have a huge chip stack it doesn't matter because each one they take out means one step closer to the money for you. Stay patient while the "maniac" is at large. Wait for a great hand of your own then take it to the "maniac" and strip their chips away from them with your monster.Tight-aggressive players play few hands but when they do, they do so with gusto. This type of player is selective about when he plays. I hope you fall in to the tight-aggressive category. When you come up against a tight-aggressive player pick your moments to go up against them. Concentrate on the weaker players first. But a final note on the tight-aggressive style. Your opponents may well be seeking to label your style of play as you are looking to label yours. If they tag you as tight-aggressive they might clear the decks when you bet and fold thinking you've got a great hand. You may not always get enough action. To counter this and confuse your opponents, consider occasionally playing hands you would not normally play and show your cards. It might just throw them off balance and make it more difficult for them to categorise your style.Towards the later stages (and certainly heads-up) you'll have to move to a looser style of play mostly as waiting for premium hands won't be an option. Fewer players means fewer cards dealt means less likely to get a great starting hand.
